Madonna Songs

My scalp feels like it’s going to rip off
My eyes burn and water
In a desperate attempt at finding moisture
The wind, it’s so strong
I notice —
All Madonna’s old songs end in a fade
You hear me say it, somehow
We laugh so hard we cry
Maybe we should pull over and put up the top
I can’t hear you yelling something over the noise
I can’t hear your laughter, but I see it and start laughing, too.
I think your face is starting to peel off
I’m so frightened to turn my head and see you
Bones left, dripping with blood soon to dry
The wind, it’s so strong

Everywhere

Sometimes the breath of you
is like a feather on my skin
Others it is Jadera bugs
dropped out of another sky
The back of my neck tingles
and so does my elbow
Everywhere.
Sometimes the breath of you
is an expanse in my own lungs
I blow it out like a deflating balloon
but it’s back again when I inhale
I pump, stomach muscles clenching
and I hold until dizziness is a false promise of release
Yet there you are again. Everywhere.
Sometimes the breath of you
is more present in my kitchen
Around the photo of us in frills and laces,
dried blue button flower tips looking like the sea
In your death your presence is inescapable.
It reminds me that I am retractably tethered to you always.
Are you air? Brought in, given back, essential and shared,
Everywhere.
